Fairview Falcon News Clips

Editorial by Devon

The students in our language arts class with Mrs. Younk talked about what would be in the school newspaper? Well... in the Fairview newspaper we decided there would be sports like football, volleyball, and basketball. We interviewed people from the teams, teachers, vice principal and the principal. Jokes and comics are in the newspaper along with upcoming stuff. There will be hidden heroes, birthdays, soup days, and holidays as in Christmas and Remembrance Day. There will also be other articles of special interest in the Fairview Falcon’s Newspaper.

Mentors by Matt

Mentors are big buddies that you hang out with during school time for one hour a week. My mentor is a girl and her name is Shan. We play games like football, soccer, basketball, and baseball. It is great to be able to get out of class and play for an hour. It’s also great to have a goal to work on like being good until my mentor comes. Someday, I would like to be a mentor for someone like my mentor is for me.

“Souper” Tuesday by Naomi

The reason why “Souper” Wednesday was changed to “Souper” Tuesday" is because one of the music teachers had to teach music to classes on Wednesday so the parents had to change it to “Souper” Tuesday. But the soup is just as good as always! Thanks to the PAC parents who make our Tuesdays so special!

Volunteer work by Tyler

At our school we have all kinds of school volunteers from working in the gym to adults helping out in the lunchroom and other stuff. They’re called the PAC group. They are the parents that help out with all kinds of school events. They do the turkey lunch, soup day, and help with track and field. We all chip in at our school and you can too, just go to the office at Fairview Community School.

The ARTS at Fairview

 Fine Arts by Devon

Fine arts sessions with Mrs. Latour are good classes because we are doing drama. At Christmas, we cut out Christmas trees and the classes decorated them. I feel happy about this class even though I don’t know why.

 Choir by Naomi

We sang four Christmas songs with Mrs. Currie’s choir class. There are twenty kids who sang in the Christmas concert. The kids sang Winter Wonderland, Silver Bells, Jingle Bell Rock, and Dona No Bis Pacem. The date of the Christmas Concert was December 16th at 1:00 pm for the dress rehearsal and at 6:30 pm for the evening concert. Be there if you can!

 Popular Song Music by Kevin

I’m writing about popular songs. Personally, I like heavy rock music. What’s your kind of music? I know that my best friend Richard likes heavy rock, hip-hop, rap, and country music. My favorite band is Metallica. Here are 12 other kinds of music: blues, folk, classical, country western, jazz, drumming, fiddles, banjos, hip-hop, heavy rock, rock & roll, rap. In our school we have people who like a lot of kinds of music.

Popular Korean Music by Eddie

My favourite singers or groups are Big bang, Wonder Girls, Rain, Kim Jong Gook, McMong. My favourite songs are Bad Boy, Sunset Glow. These are my favourite songs because when I listen to these songs they make me happy and my stress goes away. When I become a business man I will meet these groups.

Band by Dustin

Fairview’s band class meets twice a week. The teacher is Mrs. Wilson. At small recess she has all the people who play stringed instruments come early for band. They come early to tune because they have to be in tune and practice. This band has about 7 guitars and 2 bass guitars. I like this band because I’m learning chords and how to play more.

Sports

 Football by Matt

Football is cool. There are seven players for each team on the field at once. Our football team tried really hard this year. We had one football game where we lost horribly to Park Avenue. After the team went home we came to school the next day and felt very bad! Mr. Biggs bought us pizza to eat; it was good.

 Cross-Country by Eddie

Cross-country running is fun but it was hard to finish because we had to run 2.2 kilometres. It was a really long run. One person’s heart was racing too fast and he needed to go to the hospital to be checked out. Some kids were hurting so much they just had to walk to finish. I ran all the way and at the end my heart hurt so much I couldn’t feel anything in my body! I didn’t know what I was talking about or doing anymore. Some people like this run, but I don’t know why! Yet, it was fun to do and I was glad to finish in fourth place for the zone finals. I don’t know in what place I finished at the district finals.

 Tetherball Teams by Tyler

Our school is starting a tetherball team. There will be a peewee team and a bantam boys’ team. The bantam team will have three people in each team. There will be four teams. The peewee team will have four people on each team and there will be four teams. The tetherball team will start before January 25th.  The rules are:

#1 You can’t touch the rope

#2 You can’t touch the pole with the ball

#3 If you hit someone on the head with the ball you are out!!!!!

I will help be the referee. I would like that to do that.

Sports By Naomi

There are many sports around the world. But I’m going to talk about certain types of sports at Fairview Community School like volleyball and the Red Hot Chili Steppers, or I call them the RHCS.

This year, there are three volleyball teams: the Bantam girls’ team, the Pee Wee girls’ team, and the Bantam boys’ team. On Tuesdays, the Pee Wee girls’ volleyball team has games and practices. The other teams practice on Mondays and Wednesdays. On Tuesdays, before the game at long recess, they practice.

Now this year the Red Hot Chili Steppers aren’t skipping; they are dancing instead! One of the leaders named Stephanie suggested it and the skipping teacher is Carrie and she agreed, too. The skipping club is going to be in the Santa Claus Parade! The Santa Claus Parade is on December 12th, so be there! It is near the McDonalds and MGM Restaurant on Nicol Street. That’s your Fairview School newspaper report on sports.

Volleyball by Devon

Our Bantam Boys’ Fairview volleyball team is a good team because we never put down the other teams and we show good sportsmanship. We are a pretty good team because we have won many games. In the playoffs, we placed third and got a pennant. I’m glad to be a member of the Fairview volleyball team.

Reporter’s Picks for Articles

 First Nations by Kristen

First Nations people are found all over the world. I’m writing about the Coast-Salish People. Our language is Hulqumínum. Our heritage is the longhouse where we sing and dance. When we have a potlatch, we have drumming and a lot of our families come together. We share food as in salmon, berries, scow, and tea. Our elders tell legends and the history about how we used to travel. We used canoes made of cedar. At Fairview Community School, grade 7 First Nation students have the opportunity to make a drum. We will get a bit of history and learn a song. We will show and share our drums with the whole school at the year-end assembly.

My Goals By Matt

My name is Matt and I am a grade 7 student at Fairview Community School. I am good at sports. I care about others and I enjoy music. I enjoy football, soccer, basketball, and disc golf. I look after my sister after school when my mom’s working. I like playing the keyboard in band. I like who I am.

I want to be a cook like my uncle Peter; he is a chef at the Fire House Grill. I want to be a chef because I enjoy cooking. I want to be a cook because it will be fun. I want to be like my uncle Peter who I admire. I would like cooking but not washing the dishes!

To be a cook, I would need to learn some tips. I would need to always wash my hands before cooking so I don’t dirty the food. I would have to always be prepared for cooking so if they called me at home I would be prepared to cook. I would always check my ingredients before I started cooking so I didn’t need to go to the store. I think I would be good at this.

Background Culture by Richard

My family is part German. I think Germans are cool. They failed during World War II in 1939-1945. I believe Adolf Hitler’s wife killed him because she didn’t like him anymore. I think I heard that she asked someone to tie him to a chair and pour gas on him and light him on fire.

I am also part Hawaiian. Volcanoes made the Hawaii islands. The Hawaiian’s then set foot on it and made a colony. The Japanese bombed them. The Japanese thought they were really powerful but the United States made a nuclear bomb and killed lots of people in Japan. The first atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima.

I am also part British. The Brits are cool, too. They were in Canada in the 1800’s and fought the Americans. No one really won nor lost so Canada stayed Canada and down in the States the US took over.

Fear… by Richard

I am reading a story called Fear. It’s about a boy who is so scared he can’t think. Instead he writes in his journal. His closet is full of journals so he keeps his clothes on the floor. I feel weird because I never thought that you could be afraid of thinking out loud, so I’m glad I’m not him.

The Honey Pot Ant by Kristen

The honey pot ant eats honey and doesn’t have to go anywhere. In the summer, the other ants feed her. Then she feeds the other ants in the winter. When another ant hits her antenna, the honey comes out of her mouth. That’s how she’s feeds them the honey. I wouldn’t like to be a honey pot ant because I don’t really like ants and I wouldn’t want honey coming out of my mouth.

Vancouver Island University by Gary Jr.

I have chosen to write about my dad. He came down to Nanaimo five years ago for school to become a lawyer. This is his last year going to Vancouver Island University. Then he will be going to the University of Victoria for his last two years. In the summer time, he will have to go to Saskatchewan for school. I will move back to Klemtu and stay with my grandparents for the summer. I think it is cool that my dad is going to school down here to be a lawyer.

Life in Klemtu by Gary

Life down here in Nanaimo is very different from life in Klemtu because the time for school is different. In Klemtu, school starts at nine and ends at three all week. We go home for lunch for an hour. People just walk in the middle of the road and only about five hundred people live in Klemtu. There is a horn that goes off; it is called a siren. All the kids under 16 have to go home when the siren sounds. But on the weekends the kids go home at ten. My grandparents live in Klemtu. My best friend Stanley and the rest of my family live there, too. Almost everyone is related there. I think Klemtu is a cool place to live.

Electronics by Kevin

Electronics are technologies that help humans to live. At Fairview Community School, we have electronics like computers, phones, cell phones, walkie-talkies, fax machines, and photocopy machines for our daily work. We also have a big screen television for movie nights. This year, we got some new equipment; smart boards, laptops, wireless Internet, and LCD projectors. The new technologies at Fairview help us to do our work faster and to understand and learn more about words, ideas, and technology. I think that it is good to have technology because it makes life easier for us.

Video game reviews by Brendan

Here are video game reviews for Call of Duty - Finest Hour and the Simpson’s Hit and Run.

The Simpson’s Hit and Run

Platform: Game-cube

Genre: driving-based mission game

This game is about the Simpson’s. The main story is about buzz cola and alien invasions. In level one you play as Homer. The first mission is to go to the Kwik-e-mart and pick up some ice cream. The point of this level is a tutorial and also to get Homer to the power plant. In level 2 you play as Bart. This is a fairly easy level. The point of this level is to get Bart to school and to build a robot with professor Frink. Bart disappears in a green light in the last part of the level. In level 3 you play as Lisa. The point of this level is to find Bart. In level 4 you play as Marge. In this level Bart returns and Marge’s job is to help Bart. In level 5, this is Apu’s level where he tries to help Bart find the aliens. In level 6 Homer is the character and he tries to stop the aliens. In level 7, the final level, the aliens have invaded and the dead rise from the grave. Homer must find a way to stop them.

Call of Duty - Finest Hour

Platform: Game-cube

Genre: first person shooter

This is a great WWII first person shooter game with multiple levels and campaigns and multiple characters.

The addition of tank levels makes it a great game aside from being a bit difficult. Some of the graphics leave a bit to be desired. In the Russian campaign, the levels range from infantry to snipers but the best are the tank levels where you command a t34/85 main battle tank. The missions range from smashing panzers to ambushing airfields. The tanks are a lot of fun.

In the British campaign, you are a British commando in North Africa. You have various missions like destroying fuel caches or riding jeeps. This is one of the finer points of the game.

 Riddles

by Dustin

Brad stared through the dirty soot-smeared window on the 22nd floor of the office tower. Overcome with depression he slid the window open and jumped through it. It was a sheer drop outside the building to the ground. Miraculously after he landed he was completely unhurt. Since there was nothing to cushion his fall or slow his descent, how could he have survived the fall?

Brad was so sick and tired of window washing, he opened the window and jumped inside.

What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?

A towel.

You throw away the outside and cook the inside. Then you eat the outside and throw away the inside. What did you eat?

An ear of corn.

What goes up and down the stairs without moving?

A rug

What walks on 4 legs in the summer, 2 legs in the fall and 3 legs in the winter?

A man.

You can have me but cannot hold me;
Gain me and quickly lose me.
If treated with care I can be great,
And if betrayed I will break.
What am I?

Trust.

Human Body Website Search

By Richard

Innerbody.com

This Website is fascinating. It tells a lot about the human body. It has a picture of a body and what system to chose. It shows the system and clicks on the part you want to go to. It goes to that part and tells you what the part does. It has a couple of hard words but I like a challenge. There are all the systems and today I chose digestive system because I was learning about and I now know more than I new before. I would give this Website a 4 and recommend at a 100%. I would recommend it because it’s good great and is recommend it to about 10 and up. I would recommend it to my best friend who doesn’t know much about science.

Evil Owl by Richard

Does this look like an evil owl to you? It was believed that owls were evil in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians thought an owl was bad luck! They would draw a picture of an owl and show it with a broken leg so it would not harm them. I think owls are cool because they can be so small and attractive.
