Hidden Heroes

Mrs. Manarin: Our Community School Coordinator, Interview by Danica

Mrs. Manarin is one of the most important people at this school. She buys things and organizes most of the out-of-school activities we do like “Souper” Wednesday, the pancake breakfast, and the Red Cross baby sitting course, and first aid emergency courses.

Mrs. Manarin was born on November 18. She has two kids: Nicole is 24 and is getting married this summer and Mat is 22. Her husband’s name is Farrell.

Mrs. Manarin does a lot for our school so I give her all of my respect and that is why she is a hidden hero for our school.

Return to our school website and check out other special events, the calendar, the educational links, and more at: http://schools.sd68.bc.ca/fair

Happy Holidays! We’ll see you back at Fairview next year - on January 7th, 2008!

Our Falcon

The school has a painting of our falcon at the front outside wall that was painted by Jeff King. The falcon is our mascot. Our mascot is a falcon because a falcon is big, strong, and powerful, too.  It also starts with the letter ‘F’ like Fairview.

Mr.Abraham: A Student Teacher

Interview by Courtney and Shawnna

Mr. Abraham is 28 years old. His birthday is October 30, 1979. What do you like about the school?

Today I went to school and got interviewed by three students. They are doing a good job with their reporting of school events.

School Events

Soup Wednesday

Helpers: Claudia, Marsha, Leslie, Pom, Menika, Mairi, Nadine, Linda, and Kari. We are all moms who volunteer.

We make soup every week from scratch. We start at 9:00 am and finish at about 1:00 pm. Soup flavours: Taco, chicken rice, chicken noodle, minestrone, hamburger, pizza, pumpkin, potato bacon, vegetable, turkey noodle.

The soup day has been going for at least 6 years now. We have had many moms who have wanted to help over the years. We love to do it.  Wednesdays are happy days!

Debate on Changing the School Hours for Early Dismissal on Fridays

Danica thinks that we should because that way we would get out early on Friday but stay 15 minutes more on the other days. Brydon says that it has less learning time. Danica explained that because we would get more weekend time, we would make it up with the 4 other days. Brydon says that we get 4 bad days and one good day.

Other people’s thoughts:

Jesse thinks that we need a change. But he also thinks the same has be going on for a while so it isn’t much of a big deal to just leave it the way it has been for the last several years.

I wish I could jump out of a helicopter to dive in a lake and talk to the fish. In the bottom of the lake, I saw some monsters and I said, “Get away you monster! Nice monster!”

By Cole, Gr. 2

One day I was walking home from school and I saw something extraordinary. I saw a huge monster walking down the street with a doggy. The monster was purple with rainbow polka-dots and funny antennae.

By Kanyon, Gr.4

October 2006 was the best time of my life because my mom and I flew to Ontario. My mom and I flew to Ontario to visit my grandma, my aunts, and my uncles. When we were there we visited the Niagara Falls and went on the Maid of the Mist. My mom, my uncle, and I ate at a place that my mom and my uncle ate at when they were young!!

Class News

Grade 2/3 : Mrs. Rogerson’s Class

By Thomas, Gr. 3

In Mrs. Rogerson’s class, we have a lot of fun. We get to go on field trips like a field trip to the fish hatchery, the corn maze, the museum, and the Bastion. I am in Mrs. Rogerson’s class. I have lots of fun with Mrs. Rogerson and she does awesome stuff like making homemade root beer and blackberry, raspberry, and plum jelly. We got to eat peas and we got to make applesauce in class for Halloween. Mrs. Rogerson’s class is cool!

Grade 4: Mrs. Currie’s Class

By Kelean

I wish my class could do more fun things. I wish we could go to PE more often and we would play soccer more instead of volleyball. Also, I wish people would stop breaking windows so we could go on more field trips. I wish Johnny and Neil and I could go and see Mr. Halfyard more often.

By Neil

Mrs. Currie’s class is cool because we get to do ukulele and it teaches you to play guitar and playing guitar is fun because… well it just is. Lots of people have fun at Mrs. Currie’s.  It is awesome.

Grade 6/7: Mr. William’s Class

In Mr. Williams’ class it is both fun and boring.  In gym, we usually play either pipits, volleyball or 2 ball soccer. Mr. Williams is a very nice teacher. We always have lots of fun art projects and sometimes they are really hard.  Right now we are painting and cutting and colouring BIG LETTERS for the Christmas concert.

Grade 2: Mrs. Sen’s Class

By Sarah

I like how we get to sing songs and do art and I like my teacher and all of my classmates. We set up a bunch of 3-D models of the school in the library.

Grade 5/6 : Mr. O’Brien’s Class

By Jesse

In Mr. O’Brien’s class we have lots of fun. We get snack time and we do lots of fun things like art projects and mapping. In Mr. O’Brien’s class, we strongly recommend having some type of physical activity every day. We always go outside at gym time and play California kickball and other exciting things in gym including volleyball, basketball, and Mr. O’Brien’s and my favorite sport, FLOOR HOCKEY!! I hope Mr. O’Brien doesn’t leave our school for grade 7 and I hope he teaches us in Grade 7.

Grade 6/7: Mr.Biggs’ Class

By Devon, Ashley, and Shawnna

In Mr. Biggs’ class we are doing Christmas colouring sheets and banners. There is more fun stuff like P.E. In P.E., we start with exercises and then play a game. In social studies, the grade 7’s are learning about the first humans to walk on earth and in science the grade 6’s are learning about extreme environments. For other science and social studies projects, we go to Ms. Hannon’s class. In career prep and personal planning, we are learning about how to stay fit and are making a poster to put up around the school. Some of us go to math and language arts in other classes with Mr. Williams and Mrs. Younk. We have flex time and that is when we do any late work or any assignments due soon.

Mr.Biggs’ class and Mr. Williams’ class went to the Vancouver Aquarium in September.

Grade 3: Mrs. Askham, Teacher Interview

By Melissa and Devon

Mrs. Askham has been at Fairview for 18 years! She says Fairview has a good staff, great kids, and big classrooms. She enjoys the special events days like pyjama day and hat day. She can remember when the new addition to the school was opened. She also remembers when there were over 600 kids at this school and portable classrooms in the field. Now we have just 260 kids. She wishes we had more computers and more money for the school. Her class enjoys writing lots of letters to famous people like Robert Munsch and the Canucks’ hockey team. She is hoping the Canucks will come to visit Fairview School one day!

A Comparison Between Fairview School and My School in Korea

By Endy

My school in Korea is called Yungwon Elementary School. At Fairview, we have 255 students. At Yungwon School, we have nearly 2000 students. Fairview School has 2 floors and 2 buildings, but my Korean School has 2 buildings and 5 levels and so there are many more classes in the school.

In one classroom in Yungwon School, we have nearly 40 tables and chairs. In Korea the students have to listen. The teacher asks us to listen very well and we do it. If we really don’t listen, we have to stand in front of the class. In Canada, if I have 5 problems, I have to go to Mrs. Hannon’s room.

In Korea we study lots of subjects like here but also music, English as a second language, and Korean language arts. If I study English very well, I will be a good student in English. In Korea, lots of students go to other countries like me as international students.

Soccer

by Crystal

The soccer team this year was made up of most of the grade 7 girls: Alana, Sammi, Natasha, Ashley, Brystal, Crystal, Courtney, Jaymee, Kendra, Melissa, and Nikki. It was good because we were all good friends so we were able to understand and play great together.

We won 3 games out of 5 (great job). We would also roll in the dirt and we would not be afraid to get dirty. We all had a lot of fun and at the end of soccer season we got together and had a pizza party in the gym (we made our own pizza). It was a great season and we hope to join the soccer team in high school and come watch games for Fairview next year!

Pee Wee Boys Volleyball

by Ashley

Monday Dec.3: The peewee boys’ game could not be played because of a snow day. All schools in Nanaimo were closed. The next game they play is away and against Park Avenue on Monday. Hope you win guys!

Bantam Boys Volleyball

by Ashley

Bantam boys played against Pauline Haarer School yesterday and won all three games. The team members were : Shane, Seth, Simran, Endy, Harb, Ricky, Aman, Ron, and Brent. The others tried hard but they were no match for the Fairview Falcons! Good job boys! Let’s get the next team, too!

Football

By Trey

Flag football was pretty cool this year and very challenging. Chase River was the easiest team to defeat but we also had our challenges with other teams. We didn’t win, but we gave it our best. The players on the Pee Wee team were: Brett, Brendan, Cole, Matt, Alex, Nick, and Marko. The Bantam boys also had a great football season and played well.

Pee Wee Girls Volleyball

by Crystal

The Pee Wee Girls played a great game on Tuesday, December 4th. They played against Seaview. They played 4 good games and even though they lost, they went home with a big smile on their faces because they had good sportsmanship.

Bantam Girls Volleyball

By Crystal

The Bantam girls played on November 29th against North Oyster School. Our team had some good servers and some good bumps and spikes (Brystal). The girls won all 3 games. The team members were : Natasha, Sammi, Alana, Grace, Brystal, Crystal, Jaymee, Ashley, Kendra, Haven, Kim, Danica, Courtney, and Erika. Even though the other team lost, they had smiles on their faces because we played with good sportsmanship.

A huge thanks to all of the sports teams’ coaches : Mr. Biggs, Mr. Vink, Mr. Halfyard, Ms. Cradock, Mr. O’Brien ! You are amazing!
