STUDENT HANDBOOK


Lunch Hour

Eating lunch at school is a privilege.  We encourage you to eat at home with your family if possible.   You are welcome to stay at school if you are participating in noon hour activities.

Expectations:

· Remain seated during the entire lunch eating period
· Eat quietly and calmly
· Eat the lunch provided by your family
· Use a minimum of wrapping
· Bring a healthy snack and a lunch.  If you require more to eat, quietly inform your teacher at the start of the day
· Leave your desk and classroom tidy and ready for class work
· Students will remain within school boundaries during school hours
· Follow directions of teachers and other supervisory staff
· Microwaves are not available for student use at Dufferin Crescent.  Please send a lunch that does not require heating.

*Students who exhibit inappropriate behaviour during the lunch period will be asked to eat at home.
 
Be Punctual

School starts at 8:45 each morning.  Please plan to arrive five to ten minutes before the bell.
Students are to remain outside the school until 8:40, 11:59 and 1:30, unless they have permission to be inside or unless it has been declared an inside day due to weather conditions.
The main entrance to the school is not for students.  It is for the use of visitors and staff.  Line up quietly in your assigned area.

Computer Lab

The computer lab is used by all students.  Please respect this community space by working quietly in the lab.  All materials used should be tidied before leaving.
· Permission to use Internet is given to students who understand and show respect for the Internet User Policy.
· Internet permission slip must be signed by the parent and student before access is granted
· Internet use must be supervised by an adult
· No food or drinks are allowed in the lab
· Permission to print must be given by the teacher

Washrooms:
 
· Use the washroom during breaks and before going out to play
· Washrooms are not to be used as game areas.
· Please put all paper towel in the garbage

When You Are Away

Students are responsible to catch up on work missed when they are absent.  Teachers will collect work missed to support students when they return to school.

Physical Education:

· Students are required to wear inside shoes.  This keeps the gym floor clean, and thus, prevents slipping.
· Please use runners that do not leave black marks
· Shorts or sweats are required for students in Grades 5,6, & 7.
· Students are required to change their shirt for PE in grades 5,6 & 7.
· Students must bring a note from a Doctor or parent to be excused from PE classes.
 

Please do not bring:

· Skateboards, rollerblades, scooters, inline skates
· Electronic games or walkmans
· Trading cards
· Gum
· Weapons of any kind
· Laser lights
 

Play Areas:

· Adventure Playground at the front of the School
· Adventure Playground at the back of the School
· There are three tetherball poles:
1. Primary grades
2. Girls’ Grades 4,5,6,7
3. Boys’ Grades 4, 5,6,7
· Games Grids are painted on our paved areas
1. Four Square
2. Hop Scotch
3. Hand Tennis

Respect Your Property and School Property:

· Keep your desk area organized
· Keep your cubby tidy and free of food
· Return Library books on time
· Admire but don’t touch bulletin board displays
· Respect the washroom areas
· Come with pencils/pens ready to study
· Label everything with your name
· Use litter receptacles outdoors

 
Hallways

Hallways are  public spaces  shared by everyone.  Please be considerate of all other students while moving in the hallway.
· Walk on the right whenever possible
· Walk in single or double file
· Refrain from talking
· Keep your hands to yourself
· Be courteous towards adults and fellow students
· Move quietly on the staircases and use the handrail for safety

Assemblies

Learning to be an audience is part of your school curriculum.  School Wide assemblies are held every Monday Morning to welcome you to school and to let you know about events coming up during the week.
Monthly assemblies acknowledge student achievement and feature class performances.  We also have guest performers and speakers at our assemblies.  At Dufferin Crescent School, we expect that students will:
· Enter and exit the assembly in a calm, quiet and  orderly fashion
· Follow the seating plan for your class
· Acknowledge performers with applause only
· Remain seated until your teacher stands and gives permission to exit
· Sit with legs crossed
· Be an attentive audience member who does not talk
 

Phone Use

We strive to keep our phone lines open for incoming calls.
Students may use the phone with a phone pass from their teacher.
Telephones may be used to contact parents regarding an important matter.  Office staff will give permission.
Please try not to use the phone because of forgetfulness.
Forgetting a lunch, school money, gym strip, and making after school arrangements, preparing to stay late to play or watch a game are not considered emergencies.  These are matters that should be addressed the day before.

Dress Code:

· Footwear must be worn at all times
· Clothing should cover the body from shoulder to mid thigh. Cover chest and midriff.  T shirts are encouraged.
· Hats and hoods are for outside wear only
· T-shirt logos must be appropriate to a school setting
· Dress appropriately for the weather
