English 12 Mr McPherson

Greetings. Welcome to English 12. this course is designed in part, to polish and fine tune your Language Arts skills. As with all English courses, this one will provide you with the opportunity to examine a variety of literary genres, and through this, develop a number of skills associated with the subject. Here is how you will succeed in English 12: complete all required work, submit that work when due, attend regularly and contribute to the group and class discussions. * I am not a mind reader--if you have special concerns/needs, make sure you let me know.

CORE CONTENT (Literature)

• Short stories (15-20)
  
• Novels (2-3 + 1 independent study--my approval of selection required)
  
• Drama (Shakespeare OR Modern Drama selection)
  
• Poetry ( A number of selections designed to heighten your knowledge)
  
• Non-Fiction (A series of essays associated with above content)
  

CORE CONTENT (Language)

• Grammar (In context + Labs in Writer's Workshop)
  
• Writing (Writer's Workshop--selected lessons/various styles)
  
• Speaking (Group and Individual presentations)
  
• Listening (Fine tuning--note-taking, contextual clues, patterns, inflections, ambiguity, nuances)
  

You will be required to write a number of compositions in various styles for various purposes. Part of you writing development will occur through the study of the WRITING PROCESS as outlined in the text, Writer's Workshop.

EVALUATION

PUNCTUALITY A daily quiz will begin each class. Those who are late will miss the opportunity of scoring these marks--20 marks a day adds up real fast--DO NOT BE LATE!
I EXPECT A NOTE FROM YOUR PARENTS FOR ANY PERIODS ABSENT.
