A. General Learning Outcomes

The focus of the Secondary French Program is to provide students with essential skills and language learning strategies that can be used in all situations. Emphasis is placed on communicating (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), experiencing creative works and authentic documents, acquiring information and understanding cultural influences.

B. Course Outline

                 Unit 1 Leisure                                        Unit 5 
                 Unit 2 Media                                          Unit 6
                 Unit 3 Jobs                                             Final Review

Each unit incorporates:    a. The learning of new vocabulary and structures (grammar/verbs)
                                     b. Written/oral/aural exercises and activities
                                     c. Selected readings
                                     d. Cultural content
                                     e. Project and/or group activities

* Supplementary reading, music and/or video materials may be incorporated into the teaching of each unit.

C. Evaluation

Each Term will be evaluated as follow:         Listening                     20%
                                                                 Speaking                     20%
                                                                 Reading                      20%
                                                                 Writing/Homework      40%

Final Evaluation:       TERM 1              40%
                               TERM 2              40%
                               FINAL EXAM     20%


D. Expectations

It is expected that students will:
                a. arrive in class on time with all materials.
                b. will not be permitted to leave the room during class time, except for emergencies.
                c. participate in all class activities/group projects.
                d.
complete homework every night as well as do 15 minutes review.
                e.
seek extra help when needed.
                f. attend class every day. Regular attendance is essential.
                g. if away:     1. bring a note sign by parent or guardian to excuse the absence.
                                    2. write missed tests and assignments due to justified absence within three days of their return.   
                                    3. it is the responsibility of the student to find out what work has been missed while absent.
                                    4. a. work due the first day of the absence is due upon return.
                                        b. Special arrangement can be made for extenuating circumstances.                                                                                             c. Students with unexcused absences will not be given credit for work missed.                                                                                 d. Because this is an interactive, participatory course, it may not be possible, even for students who                                                     are legitimately absent to make up missed work.

E. Materials required

a. 3-ring binder with dividers, writing materials, lined paper
b. French/English dictionary is mandatory (Robert Collins is recommended)
c. day planner
d. red and blue pen
