Art and culture in the 1930s were profoundly affected by the Great Depression and the policies of the dictators who had gained control of Italy, Germany and the USSR. In the USA, the government became involved in the arts as part of its New Deal programs.
Your task is to compile a scrapbook of the art and culture of the period that reflects the society in which the pieces were created. Examples should be drawn from the following areas:
· visual art, painting, sculpture and photography
· architecture
· music
· theatre and dance
· film
Include one example for Italy, three each for Germany, the USSR, and the USA for a total of ten items.
Use books, magazines or the Internet as your sources. The following
URLs will be helpful:
· http://newdeal.feri.org/library
If they do not provide sufficient material, try a good search engine
such as Metacrawler and use search terms such as:
· "third reich" AND art
· "socialist realism" AND art
· 1930s AND art AND usa
Each item in your scrapbook should consist of some kind of graphic - photo, painting, drawing, collage etc. Present each selection on a separate sheet of white unlined paper, suitably titled, attributed and dated. That is, the artist’s name, the title of the work and the year of its creation must be included, together with the full bibliographic details of where you got it. If it is from an Internet site, then the full URL is required. Group entries by country.
Beneath each item, you must write a brief explanation of how the work is illustrative of the period. How does it reflect what was going on in the country of origin at the time that it was created?
At the end of your scrapbook, you must include a half to full page analysis of the arts and culture in the 1930s based on the 10 entries in your scrapbook.. At the front of your scrapbook you must have a title page and a table of contents.
