| English 12 is the most senior English course in the British Columbia curriculum; its major objective is to help students acquire a level of literacy that will enhance their opportunities in later life including career preparation and skill development that may help them in post- secondary studies. In Mr. Companion's class the emphasis is on critical thinking and quality of written expression. We use literature as a foundation for developing critical thinking skills and practice at writing fluently.Assistance is available on the teacher's web page at the address above. The web site also includes a link that is accessible by student number where you can view interim reports of your progress once per term. Parents are advised that interim reports will be posted at this web site on or near the school interim report time and they should visit this page to acquire information about their son or daughter's progress. |
Ongoing Units of Study:While the literary units which follow are the foundation of English 12, there are a number of topics which will be covered in great detail on an ongoing basis throughout the course...these are as follows:- Advanced Composition Skills; students will be instructed in academic thesis essay writing. Students may wish to study Mr. Companion's section on essay writing on the home page under English 12 Links as a study source. - English Grammar and Usage; Mostly focusing on proper sentence structure, punctuation, and common errors of usage such as fragments, comma-splice, misplaced modifiers, faulty parallelism, subject-verb agreement etc... - Vocabulary Development; throughout the course, students will be expected to show signs of a growing vocabulary especially as it pertains to appropriate language for certain genres of writing specifically essay writing. |
Grading in English 12English 12 is a provincially examinable course and students can expect the following grading profile:

Classroom Expectations:Please observe the following classroom standards when in Mr. Companion's room:1. Do not bring food, drinks, cd or mp3 players, or any other electronic
devices into the classroom (water excepted); these items will be confiscated.
Mr. Companion will NOT sign extra-curricular release forms unless the student HAS A C+ OR BETTER as a running average; it is a parent's responsibility to assign permission to a student to miss class for a school based extra-curricular activity; parents are advised that it is the student's responsibility for ensuring that missed work is completed; any classroom instruction missed may affect student progress and this should be kept to a minimum.
