NOVEMBER 5TH, 2009
Text Box: Dear parents, community members and students,

We are now almost finished Term 1 (halfway through Semester 1). Friday the 13th is the last day for marks cut off and it is good time to remind students to complete any missing assignments and to study for any mid-term exams.
We are looking forward to meeting with you on Report Card night on Thursday, November 26th from 4:00—6:30 pm. For our new parents, students are dismissed at 1:30 pm and parents come to the gym to pick up report cards and meet their son/daughter’s teachers. We are looking forward to meeting you!

It has been a very busy fall with a number of successful student leadership activities, athletic events and the primary reason we are here: teaching and learning activities. I would like to thank our teacher mentors who are supervising student teachers from VIU and UVIC. Mrs. Laird, Mr. Darbyshire, Mr. Sandeman-Allen, Mr. Norcutt, Ms. Aitken, Ms. Ausmus, Ms. Lechthaler and Ms. Gannon. Also, many thanks to Mr. Mark for leading another highly successful mountain bike club, Mr. Norcutt for supervising the weight room in the mornings, and Ms. Vosshans for opening the library at lunch. Our students are also benefiting from the time and expertise of our coaches this season: Ms. Gannon, Ms. Letchthaler, Mr. Epp, Mr. Norcutt, Mr. Rounis, Mr. Membery and Mr. Mark. Mr. Bourke deserves a round of applause for his hard work in helping our school implement a new attendance and reporting program. I would also like to acknowledge our office staff, Ms. Drakeley and Ms. Milburn for their support and professionalism in the Bcesis Teacher Assist implementation and a special thank you goes out to our whole staff for their patience, support and successes with this initiative.

On another note, I would like to congratulate Ms. Harris (Aboriginal support teacher) for her run in the Olympic torch relay. This was especially meaningful for her, her family and her community as her father ran in 1988. Way to go!

       Sincerely, Susann Young

Text Box: School Closures (due to inclement weather)
Policy—The following is a reminder about the Board’s school closure policy for students and employees.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other problems such as power outages or bad weather, announcements will be on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM and WAVE 102.3 FM) by 7 a.m. on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station — tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
Power Outages:
As far as power outages while students are at school goes, we will inform classes of the following: With the rainy, windy season approaching, the school and surrounding areas may experience power outages. Where possible, instruction will continue during a power outage (all classrooms have windows, allowing natural light in). To insure student safety, students will be required to stay with their class and not wander in the building. Power outages may last a few minutes or a few hours. School will likely not be dismissed unless student health and safety is at risk.

Community Support for Shop Program
Mr. Claude Beaudoin from Wolseley Canada has kindly donated sheet metal off-cuts to Cedar Community Secondary School’s shop. He also generously donated some snips and hand folding tools for sheet metal. This will allow students to work and gain skills for sheet metal projects.

I would also like to thank Mr. MacIntyre for negotiating and acquiring the sheet metal and Mrs. MacIntryre for making the delivery.
Thanks to all those concerned! Mr. Ballantine
