DECEMBER 8TH, 2010
Text Box: Dear parents, community members and students,

We have had an eventful few weeks since the last newsletter!

We had a very successful Remembrance Day assembly, with performances from Mr. Norcutt’s Drama class and student performances by Kelsey Danielson, Andrew Mikus, and Andrew Gates. We have also had a number of volleyball teams compete in district and island tournaments. All teams represented us very well. Our Senior girls competed in the Provincial tournament and won “Most Sportsman-like Team: and the Silver Medal. This is the first such win for our volleyball teams!

Our report card night (which was rescheduled to accommodate the snow day had a 50% pick up - it was great to meet a number of you and discuss your students’ successes and/or challenges.

Shortly after that, we celebrated student academic success with Honour Roll assemblies: 62% - grade 8, 45% - grade 9, 51%-grade 10, 46 % - grade 11 and 47% - grade 12. That gives us an average of 50% of our students who have achieved a “B” or higher average. This is the highest percentage since I started tracking the data three years ago. I am very proud of our student progress so far-they are demonstrating our motto - ”Cedar: We’re in it to Learn”!

For the next report card, we plan to institute a new Honour Roll—the “Vice Principal’s List”. This will give us an opportunity to celebrate good work ethics by recognizing students who earn all “g’s” (good) and/or “E’s” (excellent) for their work habits on the report card.
Our grade 11 and 12 students had a chance to explore post-secondary options at the Post-Secondary day at Cedar this week and I’m sure a number of them received a lot of good information.
Interim reports are going home Wednesday next week (Dec. 15th) which will give a snapshot of progress this term. I encourage parents to review these with their sons/daughters as there will only be about four weeks of classes left before exams at the end of this semester. This will also give students a chance to take any “I” work home and get it completed over the holiday. Our last day of classes before the Christmas holidays will be December 17th. We will have students do a locker clean up and we will encourage students to check the lost and found before leaving for the break. Unclaimed items will be cleaned and sent to a local charity.

2nd in BC and Most Sportsmanlike Team
I believe that a headline only tells a very small part of a story, and in fact so will this article. Last year when our girls placed 2nd on the island they did not qualify for the provincial championship and they made a very clear goal to return to the island final, and win it.
The hardest part about setting goals is that they have to be high enough to reach, yet what do you do when they’ve been achieved? We quickly decided to change our plan to “now a medal” at the provincial championships. This goal was met last Saturday morning and immediately there after, we looked at ourselves and realized that we could do a bit more. We raised the bar for ourselves again and prepared to play our best. In losing 3—1 including the last 2 games by two we realized that in the process we had done something very special!

On route to winning the silver medal we were also recognized as the “Most Sportsmanlike” team at the 16 team tournament. This annual award is voted by the officials at the tournament and is presented to the school that best displays the characteristics of sportsmanship, honour and respect for the officials, opponents, and their own team.

Placing 2nd at the tournament is an excellent result, doing it with class and representing your school in the best way possible is an epic achievement. The rest of this story could be completed by each of our athletes as individually they had to overcome obstacles, make sacrifices, and learn to become selfless in building a successful team.

As their coach and Vice Principal I am so proud of their success and the way they represented our school.
Congratulations to everyone!

“CEDAR:  WE’RE IN IT TO LEARN!”
