APRIL 8, 2010
Text Box: Dear parents, community members and students,

The first term of the second semester is almost over. Marks cut-off is Friday this week and we have been encouraging students to get in any missing assignments before that day. Report card night is Thursday, April 22nd from 4– 6:30 pm., and we will be dismissing early to prepare for parent/teacher interviews. We will be attaching student course requests for next year for your information. If there are changes to the requests, please contact Mrs. Smith or Ms. Isaachsen (school counsellors) We look forward to meeting you in the gym on the 22nd!

Students have been busy this season with Sr. girls soccer, golf, badminton, rugby and Grade 8 boys’ volleyball. Many thanks go to coaches; Mr. Norcutt, Mr. Epp, sponsor Ms. Isaachsen, Mr. Mark and student coach Harrison Stupich!

We have a number of fine student teachers working in our school this year: Peter Luff, Julia Kutka, Jessica Robb, Jennifer Le and Danielle Paling. Many thanks go to teachers: Mrs. Laird, Ms. Ausmus, Mrs. Aitken, Mr. Norcutt, Mr. Sandeman-Allen and Mr. Rodgers for providing mentorship and support to these developing teachers!

As we move into nicer weather (we hope) we sometimes note an increase in truancy from school. We would like to remind parents to provide students with a note or a phone call for an excused absence. When students are caught skipping, they are assigned a Friday School detention (from 1—2:30 pm).

This semester, we have also been working on improving student punctuality to class. We were finding that a significant number of students were coming to classes late. In the morning, one teacher could be interrupted 3-8 times by students coming in late. We had an assembly with students to outline the concerns and the plan to change that culture. 1. Staff helps to usher students to class. 2. Teacher closes the door when they are ready to instruct. 3. Any students coming late to class without it being excused are given a late slip by the office and are assigned a noon detention that day. We have noticed a large reduction in the number of students late between classes and a reduction of the number of student lates in the morning. We thank you for your support on these items.

Dress for Success

As spring takes full bloom and the weather gets warmer often we see students arriving to school wearing fewer layers. It is important to remember that the school is a place of learning and a workplace for many. Some considerations to keep in mind include the tops meeting the bottoms. Your bottoms should be a regular cut (rather than low cut) and to avoid backless and low cut tops. Along with this, keep your under garments covered up. Finally, the messages or images on the clothing need to be appropriate for a school setting.

Dressing for success in school is a step to showing respect for yourself and the others in the building. Keep these items in mind when choosing what you should and should not wear to school.
