NOVEMBER 3, 2010
Text Box: Dear parents, community members and students,

We are now almost finished Term 1 (halfway through Semester 1). Friday the 12th is the last day for marks cut off and it is a good time to remind students to complete any missing assignments and to study for any mid-term exams. We are looking forward to meeting with you on Report Card night on Thursday, November 25th from 4:00 – 6:30 pm. For our new parents, students are dismissed at 1:30 and parents come to the gym to pick up report cards and meet their son/daughter’s teachers. We are looking forward to meeting you!

It has been a very busy fall with a number of successful student leadership activities, athletic events and the primary reason we are here: teaching and learning activities. I would like to thank our teacher mentors who are supervising student teachers from VIU and UVIC: Mrs. Laird, Mr. Busche, Mr. Hart, Mr. Norcutt, Ms. Aitken, Ms. Lechthaler and Mr. Bourke. Also, many thanks to Mr. Mark for leading another highly successful mountain bike club, Mr. Norcutt for supervising the weight room in the mornings, and Ms. Vosshans for opening the library at lunch. Our students are also benefitting from the time and expertise of our coaches this season: Ms. Gannon, Ms. Lechthaler, Mr. Rounis, Mr. Epp, Ms Ausmus and Mr. Mark.

These and other activities are what connect students to teachers and to school. They teach students responsibility, team-work, sportsmanship, confidence, cooperation and many other life skills and attributes. We would like to celebrate our student’s participation and successes to date, and have high-lighted our volleyball athletes this issue.
On a final note, I would like to thank all the parents who came out to the last PAC meeting or who indicated an interest in helping out. We had a record turn-out and I look forward to working with the “team” throughout this year.

Yours sincerely,
Susann Young

Remembrance Day Assembly

On Wednesday November 10, 2010 starting at 10:30am we will be holding our annual Remembrance Day Assembly.  This event is an opportunity for our community to come together and honour our Canadian soldiers that have given their lives to protect our country.  Each assembly makes references to the numerous wars and conflicts that Canadians have been involved in including the First World, Second World, Korean, and Afghanistan Wars.

I have invited our Cedar students that are Cadets and our Youth Response Team Constable, Sue Phillips, to arrive in uniform and be marched in by Pipe Major Darcy Cowan.  Members of our students council will be making presentations along with Mr. Norcutt’s drama class will also have a 15-minute play commemorating the event.

I would also like to formally invite any Cedar family members that would like to take part in the event.  The school will be giving away poppies from our local Legion Branch.  All donations from the poppies fund go directly to the Legion and the Veterans.  I look forward to seeing everyone next Wednesday.
