Most of these comedians we collected were in silent movies (eg. Charlie Chaplin) but not all. Comedy has certainly changed since then, adding new technology changing from the silent film era.
Personally, (Bryan) I don't find silent films funny.
(Keith) Comedy has certaainly changed over the years.
These are some of the past comedians. We've found a collection of a few of the comedy greats.

Kaufman, Andy
Comedian-provocateur primarily
remembered for playing
squeaky-voiced auto mechanic
Latka Gravas on TV's Taxi
(1978-1983), but posthumously
worshipped for the Dadaist
provocations he staged on
network television. Kaufman
redefined comedy in the 1970s
with his peculiar, often jokeless,
routines: his repertoire included reading deadpan from The Great
Gatsby until drowned out by the roar of the audience's displeasure;
eating a bowl of potatoes and then crawling into a sleeping
bag for
25 minutes before emerging to perform an uncanny Elvis
impersonation; and frantically lip-synching the Mighty Mouse
theme
song. Among Kaufman's many media stunts, the most outlandish
was
his venture into wrestling--beginning in 1979 the comedian staged
bouts exclusively against women and declared himself the world's
"Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion." When Kaufman took on his
first male opponent, the heavyweight Jerry Lawler, after a public
feud, the comedian ended up in a Memphis, Tennessee, hospital
with
a badly injured vertebrae. When Kaufman died in 1984 of lung
cancer, it was believed by some that he was perpetrating another
stunt by faking his own death, a rumor fueled by Kaufman's
prediction of his return from the dead on his 50th birthday
(January
17, 1999).
R.E.M.'s 1992 song "Man in the Moon"
was inspired by
Kaufman, and singer/performance artist Laurie Anderson has also
recorded a Kaufman tribute. In 1997 Variety reported that Scott
Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the writing duo behind The
People vs. Larry Flynt, had penned a film about Kaufman's life
under the aegis of Jersey Films, the production company of
Kaufman's Taxi co-star Danny DeVito.

Abbott & Costello
Abbott & Costello were one of the greatest comedy teams in the history
of show business. They mastered the straightman/clown relationship,
creating a magical chemistry that would take them from the burlesque
stage to radio to broadway to film and finally, to television
Born William Alexander Abbott on October 6, 1897 in Asbury Park,
N.J., Bud became one of the most sought after and polished straightmen
on the burlesque circuit. It was here that he met his future partner,
Louis
Francis Cristillo, born on March 6, 1906 in Paterson, N.J.
Their official teaming was in 1936. Although they became a popular
booking commodity on the burlesque wheel, it wasn't until they appeared
on the KATE SMITH RADIO HOUR, performing
what would soon become known as their classic signature skit, "Who's
On First," that Bud Abbott & Lou Costello were hurled
to stardom, and to Hollywood.
Signed to Universal in 1939, Abbott & Costello reigned as the new
"Kings Of Comedy," producing a solid decade of box
office hits as: "Buck Privates;" "In The Navy;" "Hold That Ghost;"
"Naughty Nineties;" "Time Of Their Lives;" and their 1948
monster classic, "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein." Today,
that film remains a favorite among fans, as well as an
international cult masterpiece.
