Biology 12: Cancer Article Assignment

Prescribed Learning Outcomes:

It is expected students will:

Describe cancer with respect to the following
Abnormal nuclei; Disorganized and uncontrolled growth (anaplasia); Lack of contact inhibition; Vascularization; Metastasis
Demonstrate a knowledge of how a virus can bring about carcinogenesis
List the 7 danger signals that may indicate the presence of cancer
Differentiate between a proto-oncogene and an oncogene
Use examples to outline the roles of initiators and promoters in carcinogens

Write reviews of two articles related to Cancer.

You have considerable choice of articles however, one article should be of a more general nature while the second of a more medical nature. ***see the attached Sources sheet***

Include:
Brief summary of the article in your own words including the main idea (or thesis) and three to five points supporting the main idea (or thesis)
Your opinion of the article which demonstrates your ability to think critically about the content (a couple of sentences)
Connections which (personal or otherwise) which demonstrate your ability to bring the content of the article into your world. E.g. why did you choose to investigate this particular type of cancer? Why is it important to you? How will this information impact your life?
Definitions of key terminology

Bibliography must follow accepted format (samples available in Library)

Expectations:

Length: approximately 200-300 words each

Word Formatted, double spaced, at least 10 font

All drafts/notes/editing etc must be submitted and attached to back of your review

A copy of the article must be attached to the document

Plagiarism will result in a zero on this assignment.

E.Library will help you to find articles in both popular and technical sources. Try typing in "Cancer" or a particular type of cancer.
